In viewing these two war films, Platoon (1986) and The Sands of Iwo Jima (1949), I have analyzed the similarities, differences, and the types of images these films have brought to the screen. One such comparison between Platoon and The Sands of Iwo Jima is the harsh realization of one's innocence.
Battle of Iwo Jima Iwo Jima was located on Japanese soil, 650 miles away from Tokyo. The U. S. and Japan wanted this island. Iwo Jima was important to the U. S. because it was halfway between the American and Japanese bomber bases in the Marianas. The island was home to three airfields that were in perfect locations for a fighter-escort station.
The Imperial Japanese Army positions on the island were heavily fortified, with a dense network of bunkers, hidden artillery positions, and 18 km (11 mi) of underground tunnels.(6)(7) The Americans on the ground were supported by extensive naval artillery and complete air supremacy over Iwo Jima from the beginning of the battle by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviators.(8).

Raising the flag on Iwo Jima picture is in black and white. I think that the picture was taken when color on a camera was only in black and white. Maybe the time the Picture was taken color pictures were not available yet. But in today’s world, we see color everywhere on a picture being taken.
